Advocacy requires a proactive approach to matters of difference based on data, education and scholarship about best practice. It includes becoming aware of trends in higher education and the broader society and creating relevant policy, programming, print, and practice. It gives voice, inclusion and safety to the community at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Advocacy includes a formalized and safe way of reporting bias incidents, proportional participation of historically underrepresented group at all levels of the institution, the use of research methods to determine need. Advocacy is not separate from other institutional operational efforts; rather it is a foundation for a just community.
