Beyond HWS

The interdisciplinary curriculum of the Music department incorporates a variety of courses designed to educate students in disciplines such as music history, theory and performance.

The intention of the department is to develop the musical understanding of students who desire to broaden their cultural perspective through study of the arts, as well as to prepare students wishing to pursue a professional career in music.

Graduates of the HWS Music department have gone on to pursue careers in fields like education, politics, business and the arts.

In addition to their professional careers, many of our students continue their education and earn graduate degrees from top-ranked graduate schools across the country.

Regardless of their subsequent career paths, our students have carried with them their memorable HWS musical experiences and used them to make music an integral part of their lives.

"As a student at HWS, I was a modern languages major and I participated in the men’s billiard guild, the Colleges’ radio station WEOS, marching band and Tau Kappa Epsilon. After graduation, I joined the band Soft White Underbelly as the lead singer in 1969. In 1971 we changed our name to Blue Oyster Cult, were signed by Columbia records and have been making music ever since."
