Fall 2007: Volume 37, No. 2

“On the Lyric Essay” celebrates the Seneca Review’s unique subgenre of essay and honors its long-time editor and Professor of English Deborah Tall by examining the lyric essay’s history and place in the literary tradition with an eclectic collection of poems and essays from noteworthy writers, such as Eula Biss, Wayne Koestenbaum, Stephen Kuusisto ’78 and Joe Wenderoth. This special issue also features photographs from John Pfahl, Toshio Shibata, Anthony Goicolea and others who offer their own take on the essay in images that “manifest a ‘thinking about’ as much as a capturing” says editor and Professor of English David Weiss.

Bringing together a poignant blend of literary and imagistic perspectives, “On the Lyric Essay” offers an understanding and a questioning of lyric essay that offers insights to academics and literary enthusiasts alike.
