Outside/Sponsored Scholarships

Outside scholarships (i.e., scholarships awarded from non-governmental sources outside the Colleges) are an important resource for all students. Like many of our students, you may receive scholarship funds from sources such as secondary schools, civic organizations, your parental employers, corporations and/or online scholarship searches.

Outside Scholarship Policy for aided students:

Hobart and William Smith Colleges encourage our students to explore outside scholarship opportunities. Funds from outside awards are incorporated into your financial aid package in three steps:

  1. To assist with your family contribution.
  2. To replace work study.
  3. To replace loans.

Note: You are required to report any outside scholarship awards to the Office of Financial Aid. The total amount of your financial aid awards, when added to your outside scholarships, cannot exceed your total cost of attendance for any given year.

Reporting scholarship checks and grants:

  • If you are an incoming first year student, please file this form with us by July 1st.
  • Upper class students do not need to file the above form, but should make certain they inform the financial aid office of any outside scholarship received each year.
  • You can also e-mail scholarship correspondence as an attachment to finaid@hws.edu or, if necessary, mail copies to the financial aid office at the address below.
  • If you receive a scholarship check made payable to you or made co-payable to you, i.e. payable to HWS & [Your Name], endorse the back of the check before mailing it to the Student Accounts Office. Please make sure your name and HWS ID number are sent with the check. If such checks are not endorsed, they cannot be deposited and credited to your account.
