Susan Lloyd Yolen '72, Past President

New Haven, Conn.
syolen@sbcglobal.net

Since 1987, Susan has served at Planned Parenthood of Connecticut, where she still considers it a privilege to work on issues that are as crucial and hard-fought as those surrounding reproductive rights and sexual health. She counts among her proudest successes the passage of the 1990 law securing legal abortion in Connecticut (should Roe v Wade ever be undone), and the 1999 passage of the Connecticut Pill Bill, requiring health insurance to cover prescription contraceptives. Neither could have been accomplished but for the efforts of a fine, cohesive group of women colleagues, the Connecticut Coalition for Choice.

Susan has been married since 1972 to Tim Yolen '72, an attorney in private practice in New Haven, who obtained a permanent injunction in 1985 against anti-abortion invaders of the Planned Parenthood clinic, then on Whitney Avenue. They are the parents of Greg, a recent graduate of Yale College, and Maggie, a junior at Colgate University.

Susan currently serves as the Chair of the Connecticut Coalition for Choice, and is a member of the national board of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. She chairs the nominating committee of the New Haven Mayor's Task Force on AIDS. She is a former trustee of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Susan received the 2005 Elizabeth Blackwell Award from the Connecticut National Organization for Women.

Susan Flanders Cushman '98, Vice President

Honeoye Falls, N.Y.
cushman@hws.edu

Susan has been on faculty at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the Biology department since 2006. In addition to teaching introductory and upper level courses every year, her research focuses on evaluating stream restoration practices and biomonitoring of stream communitites in the Finger Lakes region. She is currently involved in research on trophic cascades in freshwater systems with other faculty in the Biology department and has contributed to studies in the Owasco and Cayuga lakes watersheds.

Outside of her field research, Susan is interested in how students are stimulated in meaningful classroom experiences through active learning and community-based learning. She continues to develop her pedagogical "best practices" and participates in numerous discussion groups and events at the Center for Teaching and Learning at the Colleges.

While Susan was a student, she was a member of the WS Swimming and Diving team, and is now the team's faculty fellow.

Susan resides in Honeoye Falls, NY with her husband, Jeremy Cushman '96 and her son, Riley.
