One of the youngest college presidents in the U.S., Christopher Howard, will discuss "8 Ways to Accelerate Your Leadership Odyssey" in a President's Forum address on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Geneva Room of the Warren Hunting Smith Library. The President of Hampden-Sydney College will also meet with several student groups during his visit to campus.
Howard will begin his time at the Colleges at the Centennial Center for Leadership and with student athletes as part of the Napier Leadership Seminar on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Joining students for a Leadership Café at 5 p.m., Howard will discuss his role as a leader - and his work helping others find the strength to forge new paths. The following day, he will continue his conversation with students the Intercultural Affairs Center at 4:30 p.m. The 24th president of the Virginia institution, Howard is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he earned a B.S. in political science; he earned a doctorate in politics as a Rhodes Scholar and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Howard led a distinguished military career, which included active duty in Afghanistan - for which he was awarded a Bronze Star.
Howard spent many years in various divisions of Bristol-Myers Squibb, working in marketing, sales, strategic planning, consulting and business development. Throughout his career, Howard has fostered leadership through organizations such as the Aspen Institute, where he serves as a Henry Crown fellow, and the International Speakers Bureau. He has also worked to support entrepreneurs in the developing world, and founded the Impact Young Lives Foundation, for which he currently serves as a member of the advisory board, which provides scholarship and travel opportunities for South African University students of color.
In addition to service to many educational endeavors, Howard recently co-authored "Money Makers: Inside the New World of Finance and Business," with David Snider, and has served in General Electric's Corporate Initiatives Group. Howard was a regular guest to roundtable discussion on journalist Ali Velshi's CNN program, and has been interviewed on CNN, PBS and NPR's "All Things Considered."
The Spring Semester President's Forum Series will continue on Thursday, March 7, with the recently elected Mayor of Ithaca Svante Myrick. Myrick will discuss his tenure as one of the youngest mayor's in U.S. history at 7:30 p.m. on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
