WS Field Hockey Hosts NCAA Regional

The William Smith College field hockey team will host the second and third rounds of the 2012 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship this weekend, Nov. 10-11. The ninth-ranked Herons will face No. 10 Tufts University on McCooey Field on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.

That match will be followed by No. 18 MIT and No. 6 Bowdoin at 2 p.m. Saturday's winners will square off on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a spot in the championship round which will be played at William Smith on Nov. 17-18.

Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for students, senior citizens, military personnel, and children ages 3-12. Fans unable to make it to McCooey Field can follow the action online with Live Stats and Live Video. The tournament program can be viewed here.

The Herons (16-3) earned the Liberty League's automatic bid into the 24-team tournament after capturing the program's 10th conference title. William Smith defeated No. 19 Rochester 3-1 in the Liberty League tournament championship after clipping Rensselaer 3-2 in the semifinals.

The Jumbos (15-2) received an at-large bid into the field. Tufts finished second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference regular season standings behind top-ranked Middlebury and lost to Bowdoin 4-1 in the NESCAC Tournament semifinals. The Jumbos hosted Castleton State in Wednesday's first round, routing the Spartans 8-0 in a blinding snow storm.
