Food for the holiday

Posted on Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are teaming up with the Agri-Business Child Development Center (ABCD) to host the third annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive to kick of the holiday season.

ABCD is a child care center in Geneva which works to support families of migrant workers throughout Ontario County including a preschool program for children age 0-5. In particular ABCD focuses on providing a high quality of culturally and linguistically diverse child development services for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

HWS has a strong relationship with ABCD including sending student volunteers there throughout the semester and sending groups to help through Day of Service.

For the past three years HWS has teamed up with ABCD to donate baskets with items for thanksgiving to families served by the program. Baskets can be sponsored by individuals, families, departments or even clubs or teams. Items typically donated revolve around Thanksgiving meals such as turkey, stuffing, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn cranberries, green beans, rolls, apples, and pie.

Last year the HWS community exceeded its goal of 18 baskets and hopes to build on that success this year and help more families have enough food throughout the holiday season.

Individuals interested in donating a basket should contact Ruth Shields at shields@hws.edu or at ext. 3959.
