Posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Before midterm exams were even taken, Jonathon Lawless '13 and Nicholas Strang '13 were offered positions with J.P. Morgan, one of the most prestigious financial firms in the world. Lawless will join the risk department in New York City. Strang will serve at the firm's Dallas, Texas headquarters.

Lawless, an economics major, will serve as an analyst in the risk department. In his duties, he will assist with credit management for specialty finance companies and assess credit ratings for the firm's clients.

Last summer, Lawless interned with the company in the same department - in fact, his new job will be in the same office and at the very same desk. Previously, Lawless gained financial experience as an intern with Morgan Stanley, working in wealth management out of the company's Buffalo office.

"I feel very fortunate," says Lawless, "Working for J.P. Morgan was my goal; I set my hopes really high, and applied, knowing it would be a good experience either way."

It was the Wall Street Experience trip to New York City that propelled Lawless to pursue the firm. "We met with more than 10 firms - from investments to insurance to ratings agencies - and when we went to J.P. Morgan the alums there were very helpful and informative," explains Lawless.

Lawless credits the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development for helping him to connect with alums and to discover the path best suited to him. "We explored what best fit my skill set and interests, and I am fortunate enough to have found something I like doing," says Lawless, who credits his liberal arts education with providing him the foundation to expand upon. "I am excited to learn more, to engage and to grow as new regulations change the face of finance."

On campus, Lawless is a member of the Hobart lacrosse team, a liaison to the Stewardson Society and a Statesmen senior on the athletic association board. He is also a part of the Economics Student Committee, which is in the process of helping to review the Economics Department. He is the recipient of a William and Diane Green P’83, P’87 Endowed Scholarship.

Strang, an economics major, joins J.P. Morgan's offices in Dallas, where he will work within the firm's treasury and security services operations.

In the past, Strang served within the financial sector as an intern with the firm, building his skill set as part of a pension utility group, assisting with transactions, processors and managers. Prior to his work with J.P. Morgan, Strang interned with UBS Financial Services, assisting clients with third-party transactions.

Although Strang has long had a passion for financial work, it was the also the Wall Street Experience trip to New York City that inspired him to seek out employment with J.P. Morgan. He credits the young alum panel in particular with answering many of the questions he had regarding breaking into a finance career.

"It was great to be able to touch base with young alums so soon after their graduations," says Strang, who sought help from various alums when preparing for his job interview. The alum network also helped Strang to explore the various companies, and he is looking forward to continuing his exploration of innovation in his new job.

On campus, Strang is a member of the Hobart football team, as well as the, Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
