Smith ’09 Starts Event Planning Business

Posted on Monday, February 11, 2013

After more than five years planning and managing events in New York City, Delvina Smith '09 has launched a Manhattan-based event planning business called EventsByDelvina.

Smith's new business venture, which offers corporate and social event management services, marks the union of her passion for event planning and the desire to own her own business. By leveraging her expertise and following her aspirations, Smith says her goals are coming to fruition.

"Some things you decide you want to do and some things you're just meant to do," Smith says about becoming an event planner. "I believe it was meant to be."

During her career, Smith has had the opportunity to work on milestone events, such as the first Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls Celebration. Smith also helped to raise 1.2 million dollars for the Harlem Educational Activities Fund. In addition to managing her newly launched business, Smith works for Events Associates, Inc. in New York City.

"I had always believed you needed lots of money and lots of years of experience to start your own business," Smith says. "But I realized that passion, gumption, hard work, and a good laugh, also come in handy."

At the Colleges, Smith majored in anthropology and earned minors in peer education and human relations. She was treasurer of Caribbean Student Association and a member of the Budget Allocations Committee. Smith also was involved in the Jewish Culture House.

Smith says she hopes current students explore multiple areas of study as they begin to focus on their professional futures. She credits her academic and extracurricular pursuits as an undergraduate for laying the foundation that's helped her to follow the path to becoming an event planner and owning her own business.

"HWS gave me the courage to apply myself to something and to work diligently until it becomes a reality," Smith says. "As a student of anthropology, I followed that passion with the support of HWS. That encouragement has led me to my ultimate passion: events."
