Victorious Weekend for Statesmen, Herons

Hobart and William Smith athletics had a victorious weekend. The Hobart lacrosse, basketball and hockey teams each posted victories while the Heron basketball team secured the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Tournament.  Also this weekend, the Heron squash team won its second Epps Cup at the 2013 CSA Team Championship while their Statesmen counterparts defeated Boston University and Colgate.

Hobart Hockey

Hobart hockey beat Elmira 6-1 in an ECAC West game played at The Cooler. No. 5/6 Hobart improved to 19-4-2 overall and 11-3-1 in the conference and earned a share of the ECAC West regular season title. The Statesmen have now finished their regular season schedule and secured the No. 2 seed for the ECAC West tournament. Hobart's 19 wins this season rank third on the program list for wins in a season. Senior Frank Salituro produced a goal and two assists, and senior Cam Miller scored two goals. Sophomore Terrence O'Neill chipped in a goal and an assist while sophomore Tommaso Traversa logged two assists. Senior goalie Nick Broadwater played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and finished with 27 saves.

As the No. 2 seed, Hobart earns a bye to the conference semifinals, which will be played at The Cooler on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The Statesmen and will host the highest remaining seed from the quarterfinals.

Hobart Lacrosse

The Hobart College lacrosse team used an 8-1 run, spanning the third and fourth quarters, to take control of the season opener on the way to an 18-15 win at Siena College. It's the highest scoring game in Division I this season and the highest scoring total for the Statesmen in a season opener since the 1997 squad defeated Army 19-12. 

Junior Cam Stone matched his career-high with six points on four goals and two assists and classmate Alex Love added four goals and an assist. First-year Frank Brown chipped in a hat trick in his debut and earned an assist while classmate Bud Graham registered a pair of goals.

The Statesmen were 4-of-7 on extra-man opportunities, including three extra-man goals during its decisive second half run. Stone, sophomore Thomas Petrocci, and Brown scored in succession to end the third quarter with the Statesmen in front 12-10. Brown and Love scored extra-man goals to start the fourth quarter and give Hobart a four-goal lead. The Statesmen will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 24, taking on Cornell.

Hobart Basketball

Hobart basketball extended their winning streak to 11 with a 77-60 win over the St. Lawrence Saints on Saturday, Feb. 16.  Junior Richie Bonney posted game-highs of 34 points and 15 rebounds. The Statesmen completed the regular season with a 19-6 record and won the Liberty League regular season championship for the third straight year with a 15-1 mark. 

Bonney shot 13-of-21 from the field and was 8-of-11 from the line to raise his career points total to 1,095, passing Art Lambert '58 (1,068) to move into 18th place on Hobart's all-time scoring list. Senior Stefan Thompson added 19 points and a game-high six assists without a turnover. He raised his career point total to 1,599, leap-frogging Matt Pebloe '12 (1,584) and Andrew D'Eloia '95 (1,587) into fifth place. Junior Joe Gibbons added 13 points and a game-high three blocked shots for the Statesmen. 

Hobart will host fourth-seeded Skidmore (15-10, 9-7) on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Tipoff is tentatively set for 7 p.m.

Hobart Squash

The Hobart College squash team cruised to two 9-0 wins at the Smith Squash Center this weekend. The Statesmen, who are ranked No. 31 in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, blanked No. 35 Boston University and No. 37 Colgate and are now 8-13 overall.

William Smith Basketball

The William Smith College basketball team secured the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Tournament field with a 72-70 win over St. Lawrence in the regular season finale for both squads on Saturday, Feb. 16. Senior Sydni Salvatore led three Herons in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting including a game-high four 3-pointers.  The Herons (16-9, 10-6) shot a season-high 53.2 percent from the floor and drained 9-of-12 from 3-point land.

Sophomore Chloe Hayter added 18 points and junior Erin O'Brien contributed 12 points and a team-high seven assists. Junior Jacqueline Murphy pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.  William Smith will enter the Liberty League Tournament as the No. 4 seed, traveling to No. 1 Vassar (21-4, 13-3) on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

William Smith Squash

The William Smith College squash team defeated Virginia 6-3 to win their second ever Epps Cup at the 2013 CSA Team Championship at Yale University. It's the fourth CSA Cup the Herons have earned, having captured the 2006 and 2007 Walker Cup and the 2009 Epps Cup. The Herons defeated Vassar 7-2 in the first round and topped St. Lawrence 6-3 in the second to earn a spot in the championship match. William Smith finished the season with an 11-7 overall record.
