Charter Day Celebration 2013

Posted on Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Charter Day marks the founding of Hobart in 1822, when a provisional charter from the State Regents of New York officially brought the college into being. Each year, the important day presents an opportunity for Hobart students to celebrate their heritage and welcome back to campus a distinguish alumnus to speak in St. John's Chapel. This year's Charter Day ceremonies were held on Friday, April 19.

Alexis Santi '99, who was invited by the Hobart Dean's Office, addressed his fellow Statesmen. Santi serves as the coordinator of travel safety at Cornell University. He is also a writer, photographer and publisher, and founded the literary journal Our Stories in 2006.

Santi earned his B.A. in English from Hobart. On campus, he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity, as well as the Orange Key Society. During his time as an undergraduate, he also served as a student trustee. He also holds an M.F.A. in creative writing from George Mason University, and an M.S.W. from Washington University.

Samuel DeLuccia '13 delivered the evening's student address. DeLuccia, a Druid and SAAC member, is also a member of the Hobart tennis team and has been named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a Liberty League Men's Tennis Performer of the Week. He also earned a spot on the 2011-12 Liberty League Men's Tennis All-Academic Team.

The ceremony included an awards ceremony. The recipients of this year's President's Civic Leadership Award, Larry Quijije Awards and various other college awards were announced. Honor societies Orange Key, Chimera and the Druids announced their new members.

Other speakers included Dean of Hobart College Eugen Baer HON'07, P'95, P'97, Chaplain Lesley Adams, and Director of Alumni Relations Jared Weeden '91. A special performance by a cappella group the Hobartones concluded the ceremony.
