DeGuilme’15, from France to Hong Kong

Posted on Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Elliott DeGuilme ‘15 is currently studying abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France, through a summer program offered by the Institute for American Universities. At the conclusion of his stay in France, he will travel 6,000 miles to spend the fall semester in Hong Kong as part of the Center for Global Education's Hong Kong program. DeGuilme, an international relations major, recognizes the lasting impact such study abroad experiences can have on a college student.

"My experience at HWS, whether it be with professors, the career services office, or my peers has taught me the realities that exist with life after college," he says. "My abroad experiences will give me a good taste of not only what life is like after college, but outside of the U.S."

He is thrilled to be learning more about the culture in France. One of the classes he is taking, "Politics and society in Europe," examines how modern-day Europe came to be and explores various questions pertaining to the Continent. "Physically being in France and having firsthand experience is something you can't get just from a textbook," he adds. "Having this international experience will help me understand more about what I've learned in the classroom at HWS."

A proficient speaker of French, DeGuilme is also thrilled at the opportunity to gain a further comprehension of the language, noting that it is very important to know a second language in today's world. Staying with a French family will be a great help in this process, he says.

When he arrives in Hong Kong in late August, he will study international relations and psychology.

On campus, he is a member of the club volleyball team. He was recently published in Orion Magazine's "The Place Where You Live" feature which also appeared on the magazine's website. The article was an assignment for Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Joel Helfrich's class, "Sense of Place and Environmental Consciousness."
