Heron Lacrosse members compete in Prague Cup

Posted on Friday, July 25, 2014

This summer, William Smith Lacrosse Assistant Coach Morgan Achilles traveled abroad for 10 days with rising seniors Hayley Braun and Katie Sipple to compete in the Prague Cup.

Achilles helped coach a USA Athletes International (USAAI) team that was made up of mostly New York colleges. In addition to Braun and Sipple, the team included student-athletes from Nazareth, Elmira, Cortland and Oswego.

"It was great to interact with athletes from all over the world," said Achilles. "Everyone was so welcoming and shared the same passion for lacrosse. This trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am so glad I was able to share it with two of my own players."

The trip began with a stop in Berlin, where the group went on a guided city tour and played a local club team. The team then continued on to Prague, where they played in a three-day round robin tournament. The U.S. team earned wins over a Czech club team, a U19 club team, and a team from Great Britain. They lost to the Czech national team before capturing third overall by defeating the Czech club for the second time.

"Experiencing the different culture and scenery of Berlin and Prague was so memorable," said Braun. "It was also fascinating to see how lacrosse is spreading to other countries around the world."

"It was a tremendous experience," Sipple added. "The best part was the people I met and shared the experience with."

The Prague Cup began in 1998 and is one of the oldest lacrosse events in continental Europe. Originally born as an accompanying tournament of the 1998 European Lacrosse Championship, the Prague Cup has gradually developed into one of the most respected and sought after tournaments in Europe.
