25 February 2022 • Athletics HWS Ski Team Hosts Mideast Crossover at Bristol Mountain

Competing against some of the largest universities in Upstate New York, William Smith places first and Hobart places fourth in Slalom in their home opener at Bristol Mountain.

The Hobart and William Smith Alpine Ski Teams hosted a Mideast Crossover competition at Bristol Mountain on Feb. 5-6. The teams competed in the Grand Slalom and Slalom with William Smith securing second place out of 10 teams, and Hobart placing fourth among 11 teams. 

The HWS Ski Teams are members of the Mideast Conference in the US Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association (USCSA). Some of the other member schools include Colgate University, Syracuse University and Cornell University.

In Grand Slalom, William Smith was led by Camila Goclowski ’22, who finished second out of 40 finishers with a combined time of 1:59.94. Other finishers on Saturday included Lindsey Crowell ’22 who finished fourth (2:01.40), Caraline Gray ’23 who finished 12th (2:05.98), Taylor Ashe ’24 who finished 13th (2:06.70) and Marjorie Plants ’25 who finished 14th (2:06.77).

Hobart also had top finishers in the Grand Slalom, with Ben Gordon ’22 finishing 12th out of 38 finishers (2:00.19). Other finishers included John Lloyd ’23 who finished 17th (2:03.71), Reed Bluestein ’25 who finished 18th (2:05.02) and Nicholas Plants ’22 who finished 23rd (2:08.68).

Crowell led the way in Slalom, placing first out of 28 finishers, with a combined time of 1:54.99. Other finishers included Plants who finished third (2:00.16), Goclowski who finished fifth (2:01.08), Gray who finished eighth (2:02.00) and Ashe who finished 16th (2:12.22)

On Hobart’s side, Sean King ’22 led the team in Slalom, finishing fifth out of 31 finishers, with a combined time of 1:47.47. Other finishers included Lloyd who finished 13th (1:56.13) and Sam Freudenberg ’25 who finished 22nd (2:03.86).

Following the season opener, the Ski Teams went on to compete at Greek Peak Resort in Cortland, N.Y. on Feb. 12-13 and Labrador Mountain in Truxton, N.Y. on Feb. 19-20. At Greek Peak, William Smith finished third in Grand Slalom and second in Slalom, and Hobart finished fifth in Grand Slalom and fourth in Slalom. At Labrador, William Smith finished third in both Grand Slalom and Slalom, and Hobart finished fifth in Grand Slalom and fourth in Slalom.
