Robert Murphy

Vice President for Enrollment/Dean of Admissions

Bob came to Hobart and William Smith in 2004 as the director of the Salisbury Center for Career Services. In 2009, he accepted a position as the Vice President of Enrollment and Dean of Admissions. Bob has a B.S. in education and history from Norwich University as well as an M.Ed. in rehabilitation counseling and C.A.S. in student personnel administration, both from Springfield College. A former officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, he worked with Pepsi-Cola, serving as Chief Operating Officer of PepsiCo International in Istanbul among other roles, for 26 years before "retiring" to higher education. He is an honorary member of the Hobart Class of 2006.

John graduated from Colgate University with a bachelor's degree in history. He served as an assistant and associate director of admissions at Colgate for seven years, and then made a move to become Director of Admissions at Skidmore College. He joined the HWS staff in 2005.

Bill graduated from Hobart College in 1996 with a dual major in comparative literature and Greek. He completed his masters degree in liberal studies at Nazareth College. Before returning to his alma mater in 2005, Bill taught English at Avon Old Farms School and served as Head Lacrosse Coach at the University of Hartford. Currently, Bill recruits students from the Upstate New York, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Caitlin graduated from William Smith with dual majors in environmental studies and geoscience. She worked in the HWS office of admissions for two years before leaving to earn a masters in higher education administration from the University of Michigan. She later worked at a boarding school in Michigan, serving as a college counselor and dorm parent. She rejoined the HWS admissions team in 2010 as its New Hampshire, Vermont, Essex County, and Boston recruiter.

"Without a doubt, my favorite thing about HWS is the community. Students, faculty and staff members are proud to be a part of the HWS family, and because of that, they all work hard every day to make it a better place. As an alum and staff member, I am proud that I can associate myself with such a wonderful group of people. Jacqueline graduated from Amherst College with a double major in Psychology and Spanish in 2009. Upon graduation, she taught kindergarten and fifth grade in the Philadelphia public school district through Teach for America while simultaneously earning her M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Afterward, she moved to Columbia Journalism School’s Office of Career Services. Jacqueline joined the HWS admissions team in 2013 as the regional representative for the New York metro area.

Lisa graduated from William Smith College in 2003 with a degree in economics. While at HWS, she was a member of the swimming and diving team, coached girls high school lacrosse and participated in various extracurricular activities. Upon graduation, she worked for a national real estate company, recruiting at the top executive level and responsible for divisions up and down the East Coast. She returned to HWS in 2010 accepting the position as a Mid-Atlantic regional recruiter based in Baltimore, Md. Lisa spends much of her time traveling throughout Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Lousiana, and parts of Connecticut, meeting with prospective students and high school counselors.

"I love meeting with prospective students, getting to know them and helping them get to know HWS. What's really great about this place is that your HWS experience doesn't end when you graduate. I keep in touch with my professors and I'm constantly running into alums, parents and other HWS community members throughout my travels."

Suzanne Willard '99

Sue earned a bachelor's degree in history from William Smith College in 1999 and completed the education program. After earning a master's degree in history and serving as a graduate assistant soccer coach at Washington College, she returned to William Smith as assistant coach for the Herons in 2001. From there, Sue went on to coach soccer at both the NCAA Division I and III levels, before rejoining HWS in the Office of Admissions. She oversees the campus tour and works with tour guides, and is the athletic liaison for William Smith Athletics. Sue also recruits students from Westchester County, N.Y., Fairfield County, Conn., and New Haven, Conn.

"At HWS, we care about our prospective students on a deep level. A prospective student will never just be a number to us! In fact, HWS students are some of the most creative, interesting and fun people you will ever meet."

Marylyn earned a degree in psychology from Wells College, where she worked in admissions for five years after graduation. She joined the HWS admissions team in 2008 and currently oversees all on-campus events for prospective families.

Rebecca Arnold

Rebecca earned her B.A. in communication from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y., and an M.S. in higher education from Syracuse University. She joined the admissions team in 2009 and currently oversees recruitment of prospective students in the midwest, Buffalo, Rochester, and Pittsburgh. Before coming to HWS, Rebecca worked as an admissions counselor at Wells College.

"It's so rewarding to see a student through the entire admissions process, and then watch them on campus in the fall, finding their niche in the community. That's really the best thing about this place; when I came to HWS, I immediately felt a great sense of community, and I know my students feel it, too."

Jim graduated from St. John Fisher College in 2000 with a bachelor of arts in history with a minor in education. Before joining the Admissions Office, he spent ten years as a teacher, most recently at a Syracuse-based alternative school, where he ran a computer-based learning program. Jim has coached college football at Morrisville State and Hobart College. He joined the HWS admissions team in 2011 as an Associate Director of Admissions and recruits students from New York State, specifically Syracuse, St. Lawrence, Adirondacks, the Capital District, and the Catskills. Jim lives in Liverpool, N.Y. with his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children, James Jr., Mikaila and Zachary.

Katelyn Cassell '07

A dual major in international relations and Spanish and Hispanic studies at HWS, Katelyn moved to China after graduation, where she taught English and traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia. She also held a position in health care benefits consulting. Katelyn returned to her alma mater and joined the HWS admissions team in 2009. She is currently responsible for recruiting in New Jersey, Colorado, Georgia, and Tennessee, as well as working with international students.

"I grew up in Colorado, so I know what it's like to come from afar to attend college—that's why I love working with prospective students who aren't from the New York area. I've always felt a really strong connection to HWS, and I enjoy helping students find that connection, as well!"

Kate graduated from William Smith in 2007 with a bachelor of arts degree in individual studies – Diversity in the Workplace. Following graduation, Kate was the first AmeriCorps VISTA member at HWS, serving with the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. She later worked at Massachusetts Campus Compact, where she was the coordinator of student initiatives. Kate returned to HWS in 2012, accepting a position as a New England regional representative. Currently, she recruits in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

It allows students to experience a coed campus, while empowering men and women and providing them with unique leadership opportunities.”

Claire graduated from William Smith with a major in sociology, and a minor in public policy with a concentration in health. She played three years of soccer for the William Smith Herons. During her senior year she joined the admissions staff and worked as a tour guide and panel speaker. She is currently responsible for recruiting from Southern California, Bergen County, N.J., Pennsylvania, Maryland, Rockland County, N.Y., Central Hudson Valley, N.Y., New Mexico, Arizona, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

"My experiences at HWS gave me the opportunity to charter my own path and feel confident in my pursuits. I will forever have a deep appreciation and connection with this place because of how much I grew. Sam graduated from Hobart College in 2013 with a degree in biology and a minor in cognition, logic and language. As a student, Sam was on the Hobart tennis team for three years after transferring to the Colleges his sophomore year. Additionally, Sam was in Kappa Sigma fraternity, a member of the Druid Society, and worked in the Office of Admissions. Presently, Sam is responsible for the Elmira-Binghamton area in New York, Michigan, Indiana, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota. He also serves as the assistant director of visit coordination.

"Because of my recently acquired alumnus status, I enjoy giving authentic perspectives from the shoes of a recent student here at the Colleges. My experience at HWS was so positive that I hope to give prospective students the opportunity to be exposed to such an experience."

Taylor Jones '13

Taylor graduated from Hobart College in 2013 with dual majors in public policy and English. He was a member of the Hobart soccer team for four years and spent three years as a tour guide with the Office of Admissions. In addition, Taylor served as president and Liberty League representative of the Hobart Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and as the Statesmen Athletic Association (SAA) student director. He is responsible for recruiting in the Finger Lakes, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Taylor also serves as the communications coordinator for the office.

"The four years I spent as a student at HWS was the most dynamic and engaging time of my life. My hope is that all of the students I recruit will replicate this same sense of passion for the Colleges through their own experiences. Having the opportunity to provide guidance to future HWS students is a responsibility that I truly cherish and hold in high esteem. Greg graduated from Hobart College in 2012 with a double major in classics and European studies. On campus, he served as the Hobart Student Government vice president, the Inter-Fraternity Council president and served on the Committee on Standards. Greg returned to campus in October of 2012 and currently recruits in Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas and Northern California.

Ellie graduated from William Smith in 2013 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology, and minors in child advocacy and art history. During her four years at HWS, she was a member of the club equestrian team as well as the Colleges' Chorale and Cantori. In her sophomore year, she joined the residential education staff as a resident assistant, and in her junior year was able to continue her passion for community service abroad in Galway, Ireland. It is her goal to assure that prospective students and families get the most out of their visit to HWS.

"The enthusiasm that students and faculty have for this campus and what it can provide students in their time here is contagious. HWS has encouraged me to realize my passions, become confident academically, and has given me a place to call home. I love seeing new faces of prospective students and families walk through the door, and as a recent alumna, sharing my experiences with them so they can gain a sense of the special community here at HWS."

Jordan graduated from Hobart College in 2013 with a degree in religious studies and a double minor in anthropology and Holocaust studies. As a student, he was a member of the Human Rights and Genocide Symposium, and an active member of the Native American Student Association. Presently, he recruits students in Western New York, and is working to bring greater American Indian awareness to campus.

"I had an amazing four years at HWS, and I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with prospective students. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to give back to the Colleges and make a difference in the future for HWS."

Kathie came to Hobart and William Smith in February, 2003 as a secretary in the Admissions office. She provided support to the counseling staff with an emphasis on helping support International and Transfer recruitment and administrative coordination of on-campus programs. She worked her way up to her current position which includes administrative support for the VP of Enrollment, the Director of Admissions, supervising the current support staff and general office manager duties. To her, the most rewarding part of working at the Colleges is knowing she played a part in bringing in the new class of students each fall.
