Dr. Priscilla A. Schaffer '64, Sc.D. '94 is a professor of medicine and of microbiology and molecular genetics at the Harvard Medical School at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She was previously the chair of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is the first woman to serve as chair of any department at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
Contribution: Her research has focused primarily on the very common herpes simplex (cold sore) virus and its relation to neurological diseases. She has successfully illuminated the molecular chain of events that enable antiviral drugs to combat herpes virus infections.
