Bill Plante, a three-time Emmy Award winner who joined the CBS News Washington Bureau in 1976, presents "Covering the President of the United States."
Plante has been CBS News White House correspondent since January 1993 after he covered the 1992 presidential campaign of Bill Clinton. His reports are seen regularly on the "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" and CBS News' "This Morning." Plante has covered numerous topics and stories including the Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Iceland, the revolutionary trial in Teheran, and the fall of the governments in Vietnam and Cambodia. He was a CBS state department correspondent from 1989 until 1992. Plante first worked the White House beat during Ronald Reagan presidency. In 1984, he was part of a CBS News team that captured an Emmy for coverage of Ronald Reagan's 1984 re-election campaign.
Plante served four tours of duty in Vietnam. He also covered the civil rights movement in Mississippi and Alabama, including Dr. Martin Luther King's march. Plante has received many major broadcast journalism awards. In addition to the Emmy Awards for his coverage of the death of Princess Diana, the Reagan-Gorbachev summit, Reagan's 1984 reelection campaign, he won an Emmy for his investigative report on the U.S. Soviet wheat deal. Plante's foreign reporting was recognized with a Overseas Press Club Award for reports on the India-Pakistan War, and for Best Radio Spot News Report for his coverage of the fall of the South Vietnam and Cambodian governments and evacuation of American personnel. Plante is a graduate from Loyola University with a bachelor's degree in humanities, and he studied political science at Columbia University.
