The purpose of the BIRT Protocol is to provide information about responding to bias incidents or hate crimes that occur on campus, and to outline the procedures and resources available to members of the Colleges’ community.

The reporter can expect a response from the Colleges within 24-48 hours to confirm the report was received. Other follow-up will occur based on the severity of the incident and impact to the community.

The team evaluates incidents based on the severity of the incident and impact on the community. They determine a coordinated response, which may include dialogue, facilitated discussions within the community, restorative justice practices, recommendations for campus notices, and other programs. The team will consult with administrators, support the affected individuals and provide campus resources.

The chart below outlines typical reporting and follow-up processes for bias related incidents. When in doubt for whom to contact, call Campus Safety (315-781-3333) or submit a Bias Incident Report.

Students may seek confidential guidance without filing a report from the Counseling Center, Hubbs Health Center, or the Office of Spiritual Engagement.
