• The Media and Society Student Ambassadors Program connects outstanding Media and Society majors and minors with prospective majors and minors. Ambassadors meet with prospective students who are visiting HWS during Admissions events, sharing their experiences as students in the Media and Society Program and offering insights about how the program has helped them to discover and pursue their academic and professional goals. Ambassadors also meet with current HWS students who are exploring the major and minor. Ambassadors serve as peer advisors and mentors during individual and group advising meetings. They offer advice about course selections within the major, study abroad programs that fit well with the major, and internship and networking opportunities.

If you are interested in connecting with a Media and Society Student Ambassador, please contact the Media and Society Program Chair, Lisa Patti, at patti@hws.edu.

    Cornforth

Economics major; Media and Society and French and Francophone Studies double minor Ava Cornforth ’24

Although my academic interests vary widely, I think they will give me a great foundation for a career I am hoping to pursue in commercial real estate. I have found the course Cultures of Advertising to be extremely interesting. A recent project that I really enjoyed was when we were tasked in Cultures of Advertising with rebranding a failed product. This project deepened my understanding of the integral components of launching a successful product and also gave me the chance to be creative with my ideas.

In addition to serving as an MDSC Ambassador, I am a member of the Hobart squash team. My favorite part of being a Media and Society major is analyzing different styles of film produced not only in the U.S. but all over the world.

  • Hansen

My favorite part about the MDSC major is how flexible and interdisciplinary it is. I love creative writing and have been able to take a bunch of creative writing classes that count toward the major. I also work for THEL, the literary magazine on campus. Last year I studied abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea and took classes that related to both of my majors. I hope to become an author and to work in government.

In addition to being a Media and Society Ambassador, I am a member of the Writing Colleagues program. My goal is to have a career in advertising or marketing, and my major, minor and internship experiences have solidified this passion. The main thing I love about the Media and Society major is the flexibility to take classes in other departments such as Philosophy and Music, as well as the focus on critical thinking and analysis.

Media and Society has allowed me to connect my interests in the arts with media and culture, setting me up with a strong understanding of media’s many forms of influence on our world. I studied abroad in Rome, Italy with an HWS faculty-led program where we attended the Rome Film Festival and visited film production sites. Some of my writing and photography have been featured in Aleph: A Journal of Global Perspectives. I am a member of HWS Votes and a reading tutor for HWS Tutor Corps, and I served as a Global Ambassador for the Center for Global Education.

Media and Society opened my eyes to a world of film and media that I didn’t know existed before taking MDSC 100. My favorite part of the major is being able to study films and television series and analyze all the choices that went into a single frame. I plan to work in early childhood education. At HWS, I have served as a teaching assistant for the Cultures of Advertising course, worked as a student monitor at the Bristol Field House, and been a member of the HWS Recreation intramural staff.

My favorite part of being a Media and Society major is its interdisciplinary nature; I attribute my ability to intern as a marketing data analyst to the vast range of classes I have had the opportunity to take. I studied abroad in Rome, Italy with Media and Society and Writing and Rhetoric faculty which allowed me to gain an international perspective into the field of media. I worked as a teaching assistant for the Introduction to Global Television course, as well as an adolescent tutor for HWS Tutor Corps.

The MDSC program has afforded me the opportunity to take interdisciplinary courses and meet students across academic disciplines. The encouragement and support I have received from the MDSC faculty have significantly enriched my experience at HWS. Last summer I studied abroad in Aix-en-Provence, and this spring I will study abroad in New Zealand. At HWS I am a teaching assistant for MDSC 100, a Davis Gallery assistant, and a member of the William Smith tennis team. My favorite part about the Media and Society is the insight into different cultures, media channels, and marketing techniques. Through the major, we learn about the history of media but also a variety of tools and techniques that are applicable in our professional careers. At the Colleges, I am a member of the Hobart football team, Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, the Investment Club and the Orange Key Honor Society.

The Media and Society major has provided me with a distinctive worldview, fostering intellectual curiosity through the interdisciplinary nature of the major. I studied abroad in Galway, Ireland where I took a class on Literature in the Digital Age that gave me greater insight into digital media on an international scale. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in sports or outdoor media. At HWS, I am a teaching assistant for the American Cinema course, a member of the William Smith field hockey team, a representative on the Student-Athlete D.E.I. My favorite part of the Media and Society major is the interdisciplinary curriculum – for example, a women’s studies course which explored the way structures of power and inequality affect the way people experience space. I am studying abroad in Rome, Italy this Spring. At HWS, I serve as the William Smith Congress Vice President, a projectionist for the Kino Fish film series, a Social Media Intern for Communications, and a Site Coordinator at the Boys and Girls Club.

  • Wasner

    Media and Society majorMadeline Wasner

Through the Media and Society program I have been able to further expand my interests in digital media and film, as well as explore a multitude of new areas, such as the evolution or societal impacts of media. I am currently a teaching assistant for Intro to Media and Society and have enjoyed working closely with peers that have similar interests and learning course material from a different perspective. Connections with professors and classes I have taken, like Cultures of Advertising, have encouraged me to tap into my creative side and have fostered my intent to pursue a career in marketing.
