Study Abroad
Students are strongly encouraged to further explore the culture, history, art, language and people of a particular nation by participating in a semester abroad. There are a vast number of off-campus opportunities, including Australia, Ireland, England and Hong Kong.
Galway, Ireland
Hobart and William Smith maintain an affiliation with the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) to provide students with the opportunity to live and study among Irish students at an Irish university. Participants in the program are also encouraged to join one of the many university clubs and organizations in order to directly experience Irish student life and culture. A service-learning project, required of all students and linked to the Director's Seminar, will provide a unique opportunity for students to gain access to the local community.
Lingnan, Hong Kong
HWS offers an exchange program at Lingnan, a university that seeks to provide its students with a quality education distinguished by the best liberal arts traditions from both East and West. It adopts a whole-person approach to education, teaching students to think, judge, care and act responsibly in the constantly changing circumstances of life in Hong Kong, the region and the world. The university is officially "bilingual" with the majority of classes offered in English to both its international and Chinese students. The Lingnan student body comprises approximately 4,500 students-half undergraduates and half master's students. International students have many clubs and activities from which to choose and they can enjoy the amenities offered by Hong Kong, a dynamic city where English is widely spoken.
Norwich, England
In Fall 2005, Hobart and William Smith Colleges launched an affiliation with the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, England. UEA has a student population of 13,000, with approximately 2,000 international students drawn from 100 nations around the world. The university is ranked among Britain's finest academic institutions. HWS students have the opportunity to study at UEA, taking classes and living alongside their British and international classmates, for a full cultural immersion experience.
Perth, Australia
HWS offers an exchange program at Curtin University of Technology, a large research university of 40,000 students, ranked among the best in Australia. With over 9,700 international students studying at Curtin University, you will experience a unique international and cross-cultural learning environment, sharing the campus with students from more than 105 countries. Perth is ideally situated for those who want to experience the unique opportunities of Western Australia, from hiking or horse riding in the Karri and Marri forests, diving at Ningaloo Reef and Rottnest Island, surfing at Margaret River, or joining Curtin Volunteers! in one of their programs serving a remote Aboriginal community.
