I support HWS to show my appreciation for the outstanding education I received and to do my part to ensure that future generations of HWS students benefit from a superior learning environment. When you become involved in supporting a college like HWS, you benefit from the relationships that develop, not only with other alums, but also with existing students.
I had just that opportunity this past summer. I am on the board of trustees of Kiwimbi International, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works to provide children in underserved communities with opportunities to achieve success through improving their educational experience. Director of Annual Giving Ruth Benedict introduced me to the staff at the Salisbury Center and shortly thereafter Elizabeth Anderson ’19 and Sarah Banta ’19 expressed an interest in interning over the summer at our Kiwimbi location in Amagoro, Kenya. With the help of fellow trustee and classmate Carol Ulmer ’72, we connected with Sarah and Elizabeth and arranged for them to work with the children in the Kiwimbi Kenya Library as well as in the local schools. Carol and I met Sarah and Elizabeth when we traveled to Kenya and have formed what I know will be a lasting bond for years to come.
