Libraries Love Lakes
Libraries Love Lakes is an initiative to bring together scientists, libraries, conservation organizations and community members to provide programs highlighting the importance of lakes in our everyday lives. Healthy lakes and connected waterways are vital resources in New York State, across the country and around the world! Lakes provide safe drinking water for area residents, supports economic vitality of communities, and promotes ecological biodiversity, resilience and ecosystem services.
Our goal is to provide online resources for communities to host their own Libraries Love Lake events. On this webpage, you will find resources including:
- water-themed books for children
- lake-themed books for adults
- hands-on activities for kids
- event ideas for adult library patrons
- Libraries Love Lakes social media
Additionally, each spring we host a free, virtual Libraries Love Lakes Info Session to help kick start the planning process. During your Libraries Love Lakes events, share pictures and stories on social media using the hashtag: #librarieslovelakes

Origins
Libraries Love Lakes is an outreach initiative started in April 2019 following a meeting of the Northeast Global Lake Ecological Observation Network (NE GLEON) that inspired members of the NE GLEON outreach working group to “get lakes on everyone’s radar.” Since 2019, we have partnered with the North American Lake Management Society to provide Libraries Love Lakes resources to a broader audience in preparation for Lakes Appreciation Month, observed annually in July.
