I study the early modern period in Europe and to a growing extent more broadly. I’m the author of The Enlightenment and Original Sin (University of Chicago Press, 2024), The Watchful Clothier (Yale University Press, 2013), and articles and essays that have appeared in The American Historical Review, Past and Present, and other journals and edited books. Recent research has been supported by the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, a yearlong Mellon fellowship at the Huntington Library in California, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
