11 September 2019 September 11 Remembered
In remembrance of those who lost their lives during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Hobart and William Smith will observe the somber day by inviting members of the HWS community to listen to the StoryCorps Sept. 11 Initiative, a National September 11 Memorial and Museum project that includes a story to honor the life of each victim. The project will be played in Trinity 210 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn more about the initiative here.
In addition, members the Kappa Alpha Society as well as Young Americans for Freedom will each place 2,977 flags in the ground; one flag to represent every life lost in the 2001 attacks.
In 2001, the HWS community lost three alumni in the attacks at the World Trade Center, all of whom worked for the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald: Andrew H. Golkin '93, who majored in economics, was a member of the football team, Kappa Sigma, Inter-fraternity Council and theInternational Business Club; Scott W. Rohner '01, who majored in economics and played basketball and football; and Michael J. Simon '83, P'11, P'13, who majored in economics, was a member of Theta Delta Chi and played ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis and golf. A memorial plaque dedicated to Golkin, Rohner and Simon was placed on campus at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
For those who would like to join the greater Geneva community in remembering the events of September 11, a service is planned at 10 a.m. near Long Pier at Genevas lakefront. (For a ride, meet Katie Flowers in Trinity 203 at 9:45 a.m.) The event will honor the responders in New York City, at the Pentagon and in the skies over Pennsylvania.
