A craft distillery in Windsor, Vt., has a unique response to the coronavirus pandemic, thanks to the efforts of head distiller and production manager Erin Bell 06. Producers of vodka, gin, whiskey and cider, SILO Distillery has shifted part of its operation to manufacturing hand sanitizer which they are offeringfree of charge.
In an interview with The Valley News, Bell explains that she began experimenting with using Vermont-grown, corn-based ethanol to make hand sanitizer a few weeks ago. We didnt think this was going to be a big thing and then it turned into a big thing, she told the paper.
Bell notes that since publication of the article, SILO has received word from federal regulators that they support what they and other national craft producers are doing, so legality is no longer in question, as is mentioned in the article.We felt a civic responsibility to help our community however we can, she says.

A critical social studies major at William Smith, Bell joined Silo in 2013 as a member of the marketing team before moving to distilling.
