15 July 2022 • Alums Anderton Establishes Symposia on World Affairs and Economic Policy

Two new speaker series invite international experts to campus, thanks to gifts from former Trustee James F. Anderton IV ’65.

Beginning next fall, the Anderton World Affairs Symposium and the Anderton Economic Policy Symposium will bring a new range of expertise and insight to campus and the broader HWS community.

Respectively focused on current affairs in international relations and economics, the symposia will each include at least one event annually, with speakers also visiting classes and engaging with students and faculty.

“We are so grateful to Jim Anderton for his generous support of the interdisciplinary issues and dialogues that are the cornerstone of the liberal arts at HWS,” says President Joyce P. Jacobsen.

“With the Anderton Symposia, the Colleges welcome an exciting addition to our co-curricular programming, enriching the vital conversations that begin in the classroom with nuanced perspectives and experiences of esteemed guest speakers,” says Provost and Dean of Faculty Sarah Kirk.

Each series will be administered by Kirk with committees comprised of faculty members with relevant expertise and student representatives. The inaugural lectures will be announced in the fall semester.

Anderton, who served on the Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2000, is the founder and executive chairman of property management and real estate investment and development company Krimson. He holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University and an M.B.A. from Cornell University, as well as his B.A. in economics from Hobart. A longtime supporter of HWS, Anderton was awarded the Hobart Medal of Excellence, the Hobart Alumni Association’s highest honor, in 1997. In 2015, he received the Lifetime Service Award, presented to alumni who have made exceptional contributions to Hobart College throughout their lives.
