1 September 2022 Historic Geneva Recognizes Contributors to From Beyond: Geneva’s Unheard Voices
Historic Geneva hosted a reception this summer to recognize individuals and organizations committed to telling Geneva’s history, including the work of HWS students.
Alongside Associate Professor of Theatre Chris Woodsworth, theatre students Anthony Bray ’23, Samari Brown ’24, Sal Fabio ’22 and Christina Roc ’24 were honored by Historic Geneva for their work researching, writing and performing in From Beyond: Geneva’s Unheard Voices, their historically based production from the fall 2021 semester.
During the summer of 2021, the four students conducted genealogical and archival research on notable African American Genevans working in collaboration with Historic Geneva and the staff at the Warren Hunting Smith Library, including the Interim College Librarian Sara Greenleaf and Archivist Tricia McEldowney. Using their extensive research, the students then brought the voices and stories of under-represented and historically marginalized past Genevans to the present through a theatrical walking tour of downtown Geneva.
Bray, Brown, Fabio and Roc were also recognized on campus at the Community Engagement Scholarship Forum in May for their work on Geneva’s Unheard Voices. The theatre students received the Civically Engaged Students of the Year Award for the outstanding production and historical recovery work of their summer research, semester long project, and culminating performance.
The Historic Geneva reception was held at Rose Hill Mansion. Alum-owned Lake Drum Brewing was also recognized at the event. Lake Drum founders, Victor Pultinas ’08 and Jenna LaVita ’08, were celebrated for the “Historic Happy Hours” hosted at their downtown brewery.
