7 November 2023 Evening Psalms: A Night of Mozart and Durante
The Hobart and William Smith Community Chorus will present Evening Psalms on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva.
In one of their two annual performances, members of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Community Chorus will present Evening Psalms, psalm settings from the 18th century, featuring composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart of Salzburg, Austria, and Francesco Durante of Naples, Italy. The selected pieces, Ave Verum Corpus, Vesperae Solennes de Confessore and Magnificat, were first intended for liturgical services under the cover of darkness.
The chorus will be joined by an 18-piece orchestra from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, including soloists Katherine Joslyn, Hannah Reich, Ghalip Ekber and Henry Griffin.
The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Community Chorus, under the musical direction of Colin Mann, includes students, faculty and staff at the Colleges as well as members from the surrounding community. The 50-voice ensemble performs major works from the standard musical canon as well as lesser-known works deserving wider familiarity.
The event will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Geneva (24 Park Place) on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
