15 November 2023 HWS Model African Union Earns Outstanding Delegation Award
During the Southeast Model African Union Conference, the HWS MAU team received the Outstanding Delegation Award and individual honors.
HWS Model African Union recently competed in the Southeast Model African Union Conference (SEMAU) at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. HWS was one of only three teams to earn the Outstanding Delegation Award. During the conference, the team represented Côte d'Ivoire.
Individual HWS team members also received honors. Emily Cartegena ’25 and Jaheim Pierre ’25 received the Outstanding Delegate Award, the highest individual honor awarded at Model African Union conferences. Chimee Ezike ’25, Jovan Joseph ’25, and Amsata Diop ’24 received honorable mentions.
During her first Model African Union conference ever, Chloe Woods ’27 served as a chairperson.
HWS participated alongside teams from the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Rowan University and Savannah State University. Keynote speakers included Charles Ubah, chair of the University System of Georgia African Council, and His Excellency Chibamba Kanyama, ambassador of Zambia.
During the conference, students represented Côte d'Ivoire on various committees and developed draft resolutions that they sought to get adopted by a majority of other country delegates. The committees focused on social matters, peace and security, human rights and democracy, Pan-Africanism and economic topics.
Delores Amponsah ’25, president of HWS Model African Union, says SEMAU was excellent preparation for the Howard University conference in February, the biggest MAU conference at the collegiate level.
“This year's remarkable success at SEMAU has laid a robust foundation for our team, enhancing our readiness for this prestigious international event and elevating our aspirations for future achievements on a global scale,” she says.
At HWS, students who participate in Model African Union also enroll in a half credit Reader’s College course focused on deepening students’ understanding of African politics and diplomacy. The faculty adviser for MAU is Associate Professor of Economics Keoka Grayson. HWS MAU board members include Delores Amponsah ’25, Leah Foster ’25, Jovan Joseph ’25, Habisona Diallo ’25, Biruk Nardos ’25, and Aaliyah Zombra ’26.
