20 February 2024 • Athletics Esports Commences Spring 2024 Season

Led by Nic Rivera-Torres ’24, the HWS Esports team will compete in a wide range of games this semester.

The HWS Esports team is excited to begin the Spring 2024 season, where they are scheduled to compete against several colleges and universities in games such as Rocket League, Rainbow 6, League of Legends, Fortnite and Super Smash Bros.

“When I arrived as a first-year student, there was a gaming house and gaming club which took strides to go competitive right before the pandemic happened,” says Nic Rivera-Torres ’24, who is the current president of the Esports team. “We have since relaunched the program, and I’m excited to be a part of this effort because I know how much it helped me to make friends while competing with and against great players.”

Since the program restarted last semester, the team has competed against colleges and universities such as Randolph-Macon College, University of Delaware, University at Albany, SUNY Cobleskill and Boise State University.

“Offering an Esports program on a small campus is a great alternative for students who are unable to participate in traditional sports or who aren’t interested in traditional athletic programs,” shares Ryan Daniel, Technology Support Coordinator at Information Technology Services and team advisor. “There are activities every weeknight, so there are plenty of opportunities for students to participate, even if they have busy schedules. We have actively been working to create the most inclusive and cohesive team in these last few months.”

“The thing I am most excited for this semester is being around my friends, making memories and putting HWS Esports on the map!” Nic Rivera-Torres ’24

“Last semester, we were able to finish middle of the pack while navigating the do’s and don'ts of running a program for the first time,” shares Rivera-Torres, a music major with a double minor in biology and music administration and entrepreneurship. “The thing I am most excited for this semester is being around my friends, making memories and putting HWS Esports on the map!”

The team is looking for more players in Rainbow 6, League of Legends, Call of Duty: MWIII, and F1. Anyone interested in more information on the Esports team should contact the Office of Student Engagement at 315–781-3880 or engagement@hws.edu.
