2 April 2024 HWS Hosts Navalny Screening
This month, HWS presents a free, public screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary Navalny.
Navalny, which follows the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny through his political rise and attempted assassination, will be shown on Wednesday, April 17.
The screening is free and open to the public and will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Smith Opera House.
The winner of the 2022 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, Navalny takes viewers inside the careful investigation into the shocking and brazen assassination attempt against Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, and who was behind it. Through his years-long campaign against corruption among Russia’s elites, Navalny has developed powerful enemies. His publicized revelations, and calls for democratic reforms, have enraged Vladimir Putin, who refuses to even say his name in public. In August 2020, Navalny was secretly poisoned with a military-grade chemical nerve agent in an elaborate attempt on his life. Despite denials from the Russian government, the poison was later linked to the Kremlin through investigations by international news organizations, including Bellingcat and CNN.
Co-hosted by the HWS Russian Area Studies program, Media and Society Program, International Relations Department, Institute for Global Studies and Human Rights and Genocide Symposium, the event is funded by the Young Memorial Trust, with generous support from the Smith Center for the Arts.
