20 January 2017 Waka Flocka Flame
The HWS Welcome Back Concert will feature American rap artist Waka Flocka Flame on Saturday, Jan. 21 in the Robert A. Bristol 31 Field House. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for HWS guests, and are available for purchase until Thursday, Jan. 20 on the College Store website or in the Office of Student Activities in the Scandling Campus Center. The show will feature additional performances, including an opener by hip hop artist Denzil Porter, as well as DJ Whoo Kid, who released a mixtape in collaboration with Waka Flocka in 2015.
Sydney Gomez '17, who helped coordinate the concert, is excited. "I cant believe the concert is just days away, I hope it's a fun time and our hard work pays off." Gomez explains that members of the Concert Advisory Committee (CAC) started brainstorming a list of potential artists in October to headline the show, then distributed a survey to the student body to learn who they wanted to see on campus. Waka Flocka won, receiving 33 percent of the vote.
Waka Flocka came to fame shortly after releasing the single O Lets Do It in 2009, which peaked at No. 62 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Later he released his first album, Flockaveli, which debuted at No. 6 on the same chart. Since then, he has released several mix tapes including Ferrari Boyz, with former rap influence and 1017 brick squad founder, Gucci Maine; Round of Applause featuring Drake; DuFlocka Rant 2 with guests such as Lil Wayne; and the sequel DuFlocka Rant: Halftime Show featuring fellow Southern rapper,T.I. Album releases include Roaches to Rollies in 2013; Re-Up in 2014; and Flockaveli 1.5 in 2015.
The event is organized by the Colleges Concert Advisory Committee and CAB.
