Campus to Celebrate Shabbat
28 February 2017 Campus to Celebrate Shabbat
The Abbe Center for Jewish Life and HWS Hillel invite students, faculty, staff, community members and families to celebrate Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, together on Friday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Vandervort Room of Scandling Campus Center.
Shabbat is wonderful opportunity to take a step back from the craziness of our busy weeks and for us to be able to share the beautiful traditions of Shabbat with the HWS community, says Julianne Miller, director of the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
Weekly Shabbat dinners began in 2007 after the establishment of the Abbe Center, which plays a pivotal role in Jewish life on campus and multicultural exchange. The ceremony will begin with a blessing over candles, bringing the light of Shabbat into our hearts and lives, Miller explains. The evening will continue with a blessing over wine or grape juice, which is a symbol of joy in Judaism, and a blessing over challah bread that will be followed by a shared meal.
Jews everywhere are connected by this weekly ritual. For all of us, Shabbat is something that connects to each other and to the Jewish community, Miller says.
The event is free to HWS students and $10/person for faculty, staff and community members with a maximum charge of $25 per family. To attend the dinner, please RSVP to Shabbat250@HWS.edu.
