22 February 2019 • Athletics Cheer on the Statesmen and Herons this Weekend
In the 138th meeting between the New York rivals, the Hobart College lacrosse team will face No. 6 Cornell University at 5 p.m on Friday, Feb. 22. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m on Boswell Field.
The faceoff follows last Saturday's game when the Statesmen improved their record to 2-0 with a 22-12 win at Siena College. The Statesmen broke team, conference and national records against the Saints. The Statesmen outshot Siena 51-34, held the upper hand in ground balls 51-20 and finished with a 33-5 advantage in faceoffs. Both teams were 2-for-3 with the extra-man. Tickets for Fridays game are $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 3-12, and free for HWS students, faculty and staff with valid ID.
On Saturday, Feb. 23, the William Smith College ice hockey team will host its first ever playoff game at The Cooler, when it welcomes Neumann to Geneva, N.Y. The game will be the Herons' second conference tournament appearance in five varsity seasons.
William Smith finished the regular season with a 16-7-2 overall record and a 12-4-2 mark in conference play. The Herons were third in the UCHC standings with 26 points. Elmira went 18-0-0 in conference play, clinched the No. 1 seed and will host the semifinals and finals next weekend, March 2-3. In its first season as a varsity program, Nazareth went 13-4-1 and earned the other first round bye, finishing second. The Knights are the sixth seed and were 7-10-1 in conference play. Fourth-seeded Manhattanville will host fifth-seeded Utica at 3 p.m. in the other first round match.
Faceoff at The Cooler is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the main entrance and will be $5 for adults and $3 for children. HWS students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with a valid student ID. The first 30 students at Saturday's game will receive a Herons winter hat.
The Hobart tennis team opens the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday against Oneonta. The match is scheduled to begin at noon in Bristol Field House. Alan Dubrovsky '20 enters the spring as the nation's fifth-ranked singles player. He was 11-2 in the fall, including capturing the 2018 ITA Northeast Regional Singles title at the HWS Tennis Center. Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson '21 are the nation's eighth ranked doubles team. They posted a 7-5 record in doubles play this fall. Admission is free.
