Two new art exhibitions were recently unveiled at a reception at the Davis Gallery at Houghton House.
Recurrent: Prints & Artists Books by Amanda Maciubais ondisplay at the Davis Gallery at Houghton House until Friday, Feb. 28. Maciubas work is concerned with the landscapes, communities, development practices and environmental issues prevalent through the United States. Recurrent includes a large print installation that was started in Eastern Kansas after she spent time researching remnants of original and re-created prairies and wetlands throughout the region. Since moving to the Western Massachusetts and Upstate New York,the collection has evolved to include responses to the landscapes and communities she currently lives in.
In her artist statement, Maciuba says her work, Considers how humans influence and attempt to change, destroy and recreate the natural environments around them.
A native of the Buffalo, N.Y., area, Maciuba received a degree in visual studies from the University at Buffalo and a masters of fine arts in printmaking from the University of Iowa. She has shown her work at the Carnegie Art Center, the Western New York Book Arts Collaborative and the University at Buffalo Art Gallery.
In d(ov)etail, created by HWS Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture Alysia Kaplan and HWS Assistant Professor of German Area Studies Ashwin Manthripragada, two found worlds interlock: a box of a strangers slides and a box of discarded books. The installation of slide projection, newspaper and website an amalgamation and culmination of three separate installations emphasizes cultural production bound to media temporality.d(ov)etailis ondisplay in the Solarium at Houghton House until Wednesday, Feb. 26; asecond reception will be held on that date from 5-7 p.m.
Kaplan earned a bachelors in contemporary illustrative photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a masters of fine arts in print media from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Manthripragada holds a Ph.D. in German from University of California, Berkeley.
