26 February 2021 • Service Gearan Celebrates 60 Years of the Peace Corps
HWS President Emeritus Mark D. Gearan, L.H.D. '17, P'21 will join other former Peace Corps directors in celebration of the international service programs 60th anniversary.
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Peace Corps, President Emeritus Mark D. Gearan L.H.D. '17, P'21, who now serves as the Director of the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard Kennedy School, will participate in a virtual panel discussion on the program, its global impact and its legacy.
Gearan, who led the Peace Corps from 1995 to 1999, joins nine of the programs former directors on Monday, March 1 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the virtual event is free and open to the public.
On March 1, 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps. Since then, more than 240,000 Americans have served worldwide, including scores of HWS graduates.
Gearan was appointed President of Hobart and William Smith in 1999. In the course of his tenure, he reinforced the Colleges commitment to global understanding and study abroad opportunities as well as community service and service-learning, with the goal of providing these elements through contemporary facilities and state-of-the-art technology.
