Ryan Hewson 03, preservation manager at Taliesin for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, is featured in a new documentary An American Home: Frank Lloyd Wrights B. Harley Bradley House. The film, which aired on PBS, explores the interweaving stories of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the B. Harley Bradley House, one of Wrights earliest designs, and the community of Kankakee, Ill., where the home resides.
In the film, Hewson explains that for many scholars, the Bradley House represents Wrights first complete foray into the prairie style.Bradley House features a long horizontal elevation, the beginnings of an open floor plan, and a collection of Wrights art glass windows.
The prairie style, as Wright said, was really American architecture, Hewson explains. We tend to focus on Wright at the height of his prairie period, at the height of his Usonian period, but we dont focus on the moment before. And there is a very rich moment before. In some ways that work is far more interesting, because you can see someone working, figuring something out and it coming together; you start to see this maturation of style.
Hewson serves as the collections and preservation project manager at Taliesin for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Taliesin is the home, studio, school and 800-acre country estate of Wright located in Spring Green, Wisc. Hewson overseas the art and decorative design collection at the estate, as well as provides architectural support for its preservation efforts.
