During the spring meeting of the HWS Board of Trustees, Interim President Patrick A. McGuire L.H.D. '12 and Sandra A. McGuire were recognized for their decades of service to and on behalf of Hobart and William Smith.
The Hobart and William Smith Board of Trustees conferred Interim President Patrick A. McGuire L.H.D.12 and Sandra A. McGuire with the Charles H. Salisbury Award and announced the creation of The Patrick and Sandra McGuire Study Abroad Fund at the spring Board meeting. McGuire concludes his service on June 30 with President Joyce P. Jacobsen's first day on July 1.
Trustee Allison Morrow '76, who has served on the Board for nearly 20 years and is currently Chair of the Advancement Committee, presented the Salisbury Award to the McGuires, lauding their spirit of engagement and selflessness that has enabled HWS to thrive, even in the most testing times. She emphasized their wisdom and friendship to countless students and alumni, collaborative and constructive relationships with faculty, staff and the Board [and] profound investments of time, energy and attention in the Geneva community.
At the meeting, Board Chair Thomas S. Bozzuto '68, L.H.D. '18 enthusiastically announced the establishment of The Patrick and Sandra McGuire Study Abroad Fund to show "Our heartfelt gratitude for Pat's service as interim president and for all he and Sandy have done for the HWS community over the years."
The fundraising effort, led by Board Vice Chair Andrew G. McMaster Jr. '74, P'09, will help make studying abroad a reality for students who otherwise could not afford it.
"The new fund is a true recognition for a couple that has brought the world to so many at Hobart and William Smith, which would not and could not be the extraordinary, transformative place we know and love without the extraordinary, transformative intelligence, leadership and friendship of Pat and Sandy McGuire, Bozzuto said."
A respected scholar, innovative teacher and dedicated community member, Pat McGuire joined the HWS faculty in 1968 and in the subsequent decades mentored generations of Hobart and William Smith students, guiding dozens of Honors projects and independent studies. He has served HWS in a variety of leadership roles for more than 40 years, including as co-chair of the Culture of Respect initiative and interim provost and dean of faculty.
Educated at St. Peters College before receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. from Fordham University, McGuire co-founded the Colleges Public Policy program in Washington, D.C., which he led as faculty director 10 times. An instrumental force in the growth of HWS' off-campus and global studies programming, he co-taught the Two Cities bi-disciplinary course for more than 20 years, and also led HWS off-campus programs in Ireland, England and Central Europe, as well as a Semester at Sea. Together, Pat and Sandy McGuire have directed five HWS alum and parent excursions to Ireland.
As interim provost and dean of faculty, McGuire oversaw the Colleges academic programming, hiring and evaluation of faculty, and oversight of the registrars office and library staff, along with other academic services. During his career at HWS, McGuire also chaired the Economics Department, held leadership roles on several faculty committees and was a regular participant in the annual Wall Street Experience Program, an off-campus program that connects HWS students with alumni and employers from global investment banks, ratings agencies and hedge funds in Manhattan. In collaboration with his students, McGuire completed an economic impact report that tracked HWS' effect on Geneva.
With fellow faculty and students, McGuire helped launch the HWS Second Chances Program, which gives inmates at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, N.Y., the opportunity to take college-level courses. He has served as co-chair of the Culture of Respect initiative that was launched in 2014. In the local community, he continues to serve on the boards of the Geneva Boys & Girls Club and Finger Lakes Credit Union, and has served on the Success for Genevas Children board and a committee to help create a comprehensive master plan for Geneva.
In recognition of his mentorship, the Hobart graduates of 2010 made him an honorary member of their class. In 2018, McGuire received the Distinguished Faculty Award.
