12 April 2018 • Alums New Seneca Society Members Honored
This fall, Hobart and William Smith celebrated three new entries to The Seneca Society Donor Wall. "Through their generosity, Thomas S. '68 and Barbara M. Bozzuto, Craig R. '81 and Kathy Hay Stine P'17, and Nozomi Hilayama-Williams L.H.D. '14 have remarkably altered the course of Hobart and William Smith Colleges," said President Mark D. Gearan during a ceremony on campus. The campus dedication followed the induction in May at The Seneca Society dinner in New York. [Their] lifelong dedication has established the financial foundation of our future.
The Seneca Society was established in 2006 to honor the extraordinary philanthropy of donors past and present. The wall, located in the courtyard on the southwest side of the Scandling Campus Center, is engraved with the names of Seneca Society members. Now bearing the names of this year's inductees, The Seneca Society Donor Wall is a lasting tribute to their impact on all sectors of campus from facilities and the endowment, to scholarships and research.
Speaking at the campus recognition ceremony, Susan Flanders Cushman '98, director of introductory biology laboratories at HWS and research scientist at the Finger Lakes Institute, noted that without the generous financial support of The Seneca Society members the incredibly powerful student experiences [at HWS] would not be possible.
The Bozzutos, the Stines and Williams are strong advocates for the Colleges, supporting HWS academics, scholarships and admissions access, alum engagement and facilities like the new Gearan Center for the Performing Arts.

The Bozzutos have a deep regard for service, both to the Colleges and their community in the greater Baltimore area, supporting the arts, health organizations and other important causes.
As a Hobart student, Thomas Bozzuto majored in English, was a Theta Delta Chi brother and a Druid, played football, was a member of Hobart Student Association and Little Theatre, and worked at Saga. He was president of his sophomore and junior classes and, in his senior year, president of the student body. He served as a combat correspondent for the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 and later earned a masters degree in metropolitan studies from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University.
Thomas Bozzuto co-founded the Bozzuto Group in 1988 and has served as president, CEO and now Chairman of the nationally renowned real estate development, construction and management company. The recipient of the Freddie Mac Builder of the Year award, he also has been awarded the Environmental Builder of the Year by the Maryland-National Capital Building Industry Association (MNCBIA), and has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Metropolitan Washingtons Building Industries, the MNCBIA and the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association.
In 2013, in recognition of her many contributions to the community, Barbara Bozzuto was named the Outstanding Volunteer fundraiser in the state of Maryland and in 2016 was elected chair of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. On the occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary, she surprised her husband with the establishment of the Thomas S. Bozzuto '68 Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Tom, with support from Barbara, has been actively involved with hisalma mater as an alumnus. He has served as a Reunion volunteer, an Executive in Residence and, after many years of service on the HWS Board of Trustees, began his term as chair in 2016. He was the lead donor in the renovation of the boathouse named in honor of his father, and the Bozzutos have generously supported the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts. In 2008, he was given an Alumni Citation in recognition of his deep regard for and commitmentto Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Craig R. '81 and Kathy Hay Stine P'17
The Stines support for the Colleges is rooted in their desire to help students find their paths. In addition to the Craig R. Stine '81 Endowed Scholarship Fund in Economics, which they established 2010, Craig Stine has been an active volunteer both in the Professionals in Residence program and the annual Wall Street Experience through the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education. The Stines have also graciously hosted Admissions events and played a critical role in supporting the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts Center.
A nearly 25-year veteran of the investment banking industry, Craig Stine currently serves as the executive vice chair of the Global Financial Institutions Group at Credit Suisse, a multinational financial services holding company. At Credit Suisse, he has earned the trust of multinational clients. He works with and advises company CEOs and boards of directors to accomplish their strategic ambitions on important mergers and acquisitions and critical capital raising projects
Craig and Kathy Stine each earned an advanced degree in economics, and they embrace the importance of investment in higher education. Both have served in senior volunteer leadership positions at their respective colleges. Craig Stine joined the Board of Trustees at Hobart and William Smith in 2011. Parents of Jack, Hobart Class of 2017, the Stines have taken on leadership roles within the Colleges community of parents to ensure the success of all HWS students.
Nozomi Hilayama-Williams L.H.D. '14
Nozomi Williams has lent her lifelong support and guidance to local Geneva causes and organizations, including her substantial efforts on behalf of Hobart and William Smith students and initiatives. Among her many contributions has been major support of the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts, and the Colleges honored that gift through the naming of the Hilayama-Williams Family Ensemble Hall. She is a vital contributor to Geneva Scholarship Associates, which has made the dream of attending the Colleges a reality for local Geneva children.
Williams was among a small group of community members who worked tirelessly to ensure the continuation of the Smith Opera House. She has worked to support health initiatives like the Finger Lakes Visiting Nurse Service and Finger Lakes Health Foundation; arts and educational outlets like the Geneva Public Library, the Geneva Theatre Guild and Geneva Historical Society; and municipal services like the Geneva Police Department, Geneva Post Office and Geneva Volunteer Fire Department. Among many other causes, she has advocated for the American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club of Geneva, Disabled American Veterans, and Finger Lakes Community College Foundation.
Williams was married to local Geneva businessman, the late Samuel B. Williams II, and founded the Williams Family Foundation in memory of her husband and their two sons, Ichiro and Jiro Williams.
Williams many contributions to Geneva have been recognized with her selection as the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award and Happiness House Humanitarian of the Year Award. She is the recipient of the Geneva Rotary Club Paul Harris Award and was inducted into New York States Women of Distinction.
