NYC Finance Experience
1 February 2019 NYC Finance Experience
During winter break, more than two dozen Hobart and William Smith students took to the bustling financial district of New York City for a four-day immersive Finance Experience involving an expansive network of HWS alums, parents and supporters.
I was a bit apprehensive to go at first, but it was a great experience for those who may know exactly what they want to do after college and even for those who have no idea says Marcel Johnson 19, a double major in political science and Spanish, with a minor in entrepreneurial studies. My experience on the finance trip exposed me to a completely different world of possibilities and success.
Hosted by the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education, the NYC Finance Experience is an extended networking opportunity that draws more than 50 volunteers from the HWS community and recruiters from their companies who meet with HWS students, share experience and advice, and assist with career preparation and planning.

This year, students gathered in the Big Apple on Monday, Jan. 14 to begin a fast-paced, finance-filled itinerary that featured panel discussions, presentations, tours and receptions with HWS graduates, parents and friends of the Colleges. Stops on the itinerary included companies such as HSBC, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Bloomberg, allowing students to meet with executives, analysts, bankers, insurance and human resources professionals.
The Colleges NYCFinance Trip opened my eyes to the plethora of avenues within the finance world, says Caitlin Chichora 21, who plans to double-major in economics and French and minor in entrepreneurial studies. It was great connecting with alums and getting a clear understanding of what they do and how they got to where they are today.
The NYC Finance Trip is an amazing opportunity for our students to hear directly from our alums at a wide variety of firms in the New York City area. Students quickly get a feel for the type of opportunities available for them and learn how they can position themselves competitively. Our students end up with internships that usually lead to full time offers, often by the beginning of their senior year, says Drennen.
At the end of the week, students were able to further connect with members of the HWS Career Network at the Colleges New Years Reception that took place in Manhattan. Trustees Aileen Diviney Gleason 85 and Andrew G. McMaster Jr. 74, P09 spoke at the reception, as did Interim President Patrick A. McGuire L.H.D. 12, who as a member of the Economics Department, led the NYC Finance Experience in past years.
