21 August 2018 Ruth Featured in National Works on Paper Exhibition
This spring, Professor of Art and Architecture Nick Ruths print Looker was selected for the 31st annual McNeese National Works on Paper Exhibition at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La.
"Looker," Ruth explains, "is part of an ongoing series of prints that explores communications technologies as a metaphor of human interaction."
"In this body of work, I have been using images of things I notice in the built environment around me that strike me as both interesting visually and in terms of their cultural significance," he says. Despite their interesting qualities on both of those fronts, these things tend to go unnoticed. I am both exploring the curious play of shape and structure present in a cell tower standing in a landscape and worriedly wondering about the role of these suddenly-everywhere aspects of our rush toward faster and farther.
The exhibition ran between March and May of this year. Ruth's work has appeared in more than 100 exhibitions nationally and internationally. He has received recognition from the Dallas Museum of Art, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Constance Saltonstall Foundation. During the 2017 Louisiana International Printmaking Exhibition, Ruth received a Jurors Choice Award for his monoprint and colored pencil print Gathering.
Recently, his work was featured in a solo exhibition at Rochester's Makers Gallery. Ruth was selected as a semifinalist for the Print Centers 92nd Annual International Competition. His piece, Everything Must Go, was chosen for inclusion in the Monotype Guild of New Englands 5th National Exhibition by Judith Brodsky, Distinguished Professor Emerita at Rutgers University.
Ruth, who joined the HWS faculty in 1995, earned his B.A. in studio art from Pomona College and his M.F.A. in painting from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University.
