17 September 2019 • Athletics Sailing Competes at Four Regattas
The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team competed in four regattas this past weekend. The Colleges finished first at the Cayuga Lake Invite in Ithaca, N.Y., and second at the Jesuit Invite in New York City. HWS was also in Annapolis, Md., for the MAISA Laser Eliminator and the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship.
The Colleges entered three boats in the Cayuga Lake invite. HWS finished first, seventh and 16th in the 18 team field. Seniors Hector Guzman and Maya Weber won the regatta, finishing the 10 race regatta with 49 points. They were in the top 10 in all but one race and finished first twice. Sophomores Jake Vickers and Sarah Smith were seventh with 82 points. They finished the weekend with five top 10 finishes. Fellow sophomores Chase Carraway and Kate Klempen tied for 16th with one of the SUNY Maritime entries and were awarded 16th place thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker.
At the Jesuit invite, the Colleges also had three entries. All three boats were inside the top five. Ideal sailing conditions allowed all 14 races of the regatta to be completed on Saturday. Senior Ian Beckley and sophomore Caroline Martocci finished second with 63 points, seven behind Fordham. Beckley and Martocci finished in the top 10 in all but one race. They crossed the line first three times. Senior Michael Munger and junior Audrey Morin were third with 76 points. Senior Pierre Thibodeau and sophomore Tory Mileti were fifth with 91 points. They won two races and were in the top five seven times.
In Annapolis, Hobart sailors competed in the MAISA Laser Eliminator. The regatta serves as a qualifier for the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Mens Singlehanded Championship. The top six sailors advance to the conference championship regatta next weekend, Sept. 21-22, in Annapolis. First-year Collin Porter finished fourth overall with 89 points. He was tied with George Washington's Owen Timms, but Timms was awarded third place thanks to the tiebreaker. Porter had 11 finishes in the top 10 and won the 11th race. He will join sophomores Chase Carraway and Jake Vickers at the Carl Van Duyne trophy. First-year Duke Cowart and sophomore Aaron Tsuchitori also competed at the MAISA Laser, finishing 10th and 18th, respectively.
Senior Anna Flahertyand sophomore Ella Withington represented the Herons at the Faye Bennet trophy. Flaherty finished eighth with 116 points. She finished in the top 10 in all but three races, including a third in the 11th race. Withington was 12th overall with 172 points. She crossed the line eighth in the third and 12th race. Cornell's Lilly Myers won the regatta, finishing the weekend with 38 points.
HWS will be back on the water for a pair of regattas this weekend. Hobart sailors will be at the Carl Van Duyne trophy. The Colleges will return to Cayuga Lake for the Combined Regatta.
