Tyler Terens 16 scored a major goal toward his pursuit of a sports broadcasting career with appearances on ESPN3, the multi-platform streaming service from the media giant ESPN, Inc. Terens began covering University of Vermont basketball for ESPN earlier this month, an opportunity that emerged while working at the local radio station WVMT.
I enjoy giving people an outlet, an escape from their everyday lives, Terens says. I felt as if my omnipresent passion for sports as well as an affinity to express myself verbally could be a formidable combination for play-by-play.
Terens radio career began when he joined WHWS during his senior year, broadcasting the play-by-plays for Hobart and William Smith basketball and hockey games, as well as hosting a weekly talk show. His four years on the Statesmen soccer team provided the foundation for insightful analysis on air as games unfold.
My experience at HWS and WHWS could not have prepared me more, reflects Terens, noting the guidance of campus radio veterans like Station Manager Greg Cotterill and announcers Ted Baker and Joseph Lasky.
HWS taught me how to be prepared and communicate in a concise and thoughtful manner which has certainly translated on-air. I cannot thank my professors and coaches at HWS enough for everything they provided during my four years, he says.
Following his coverage of University of Vermont basketball, Terens will join the United Soccer League and National Womens Soccer League as a livestream commentator.
Terens previously reported for the Atlantic Collegiate Basketball League, America East TV, IVY League Network, Patriot League Network and Metro Soccer Nation.
