5 November 2016 Zuckerman '16 Joins EDP Renewables

After graduating with a degree in economics and environmental studies, Sam Zuckerman '16 joined EDP Renewables as a project developer. EDP Renewables is one of the largest producers of wind and solar energy globally.

In this role, Zuckerman is responsible for evaluating viability of prospective wind and solar projects in EDPR's pipeline, acquiring permitting for the projects, securing lease agreements with landowners, as well as many other aspects associated with facilitating projects through construction. Zuckerman travels 50 percent of the time to project sites, various company offices, and government agencies.

Zuckerman's coursework as a student at HWS helped prepare him for his current role. He worked closely with his adviser, Professor of Economics and Environmental Studies Thomas Drennen, to tailor his classes to his interest in renewable energy.

"Professor Drennen was a fundamental player in my time at HWS," says Zuckerman. "His area of specialty fit well with my desired industry, and he helped me select courses that would best prepare me for working in the renewable energy industry."

Before graduation, Zuckerman worked with the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education on his job search, including obtaining internships and assistance with applications and in conducting mock interviews.

During his junior year, Zuckerman landed an internship at Puget Sound Energy, a private utility in Seattle, Wash. In his senior year, he worked with QwikSolar, a solar company in Geneva, N.Y. He was also a member of the energy and climate committee on campus that met monthly to discuss strategies in reducing campus energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

Zuckerman advises current students to follow their passions and to get as much experience as possible in the workplace before graduating. "I am passionate about the work that I am doing. Every day is so variable and challenging, and because of that, it doesn't feel like work," he says.

As a student, Zuckerman was a member of the Hobart rowing team.
