- This Week in Photos recognizes our student-athletes who recently learned they won’t be able to compete against other teams this fall, although they will be able to practice. Here we highlight an athlete from each team who nailed a key play last season. Above, Rayshawn Boswell '23 sealed Hobart’s New York State Bowl victory over Cortland with a 95-yard kickoff return. He led the nation with a Hobart season record 36.9-yard kick return average.
- Mackenzie Wodka '23 scored twice during William Smith’s 3-2 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence, including the game winner in overtime. She finished the year with a team best 14 points on five goals and four assists.
- Binjo Emmanuel '20 anchored Hobart’s defense to a 1-0 victory over then No. 5 Messiah to open the season. The Statesmen went on to win the Liberty League Championship and Emmanuel was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region first team.
- Maialen Martinez '21 scored the game-winning goal 1:47 into the second overtime to lift William Smith past No. 10 Hardin-Simmons 1-0. The Herons advanced to the national championship game and finished the year second in the nation. Martinez was named the D3soccer.com Defender of the Year and was the United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year.
- The HWS sailing team opened the spring season winning the George Washington Team Race. Hector Guzman '20 and Maya Weber '20 led the Colleges to a 14-1 record on the weekend, crossing the line 1-2 in nine of their first 10 races. The duo became the first HWS sailors to earn All-America honors in each of their four seasons.
- Josh Wasserman ’20 won the Alfred Invitational by five seconds over teammate Jacob Appleton ’23 as the Statesmen won the team title by 21 points over the runner-up.
- In their second race of the season, the Herons had the first seven runners across the line as they posted a perfect score to win the Alfred Invitational.
- Hobart’s varsity eight won a bronze medal at the Head of the Charles. It was the fifth time the Statesmen have reached the podium at the event.
- The Herons won bronze medals in both the varsity and second varsity eight at the Head of the Genesee to open the season.
- Hobart rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat No. 17 Springfield 62-61 and advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship for the first time in program history. Dan Masino ’21 hit a layup with two seconds remaining to give the Statesmen the lead and Tucker Lescoe ‘20 stole the Pride's inbounds pass to seal the victory.
- Forward Lauren Devaney '23 was named the Liberty League’s Rookie of the Week five times last season. The Geneva, N.Y., native scored 16 points in her collegiate debut, the most points by a Heron in her first game since 1993.
- Quinn Udy '21 posted a 2-0 weekend to open the season. He logged wins in the No. 2 spot against Chatham and Denison. Udy finished the year with a 12-10 overall record, including a 11-8 mark in the No. 1 spot.
- Gabby Fraser '20 won all three of her matches at No. 2 on the ladder, leading the Herons to the 2019-20 Liberty League Championship, the Herons’ first conference title since 2005-06. She finished the year with a team-best 17-5 overall record.
- Anna Leffler '20 broke the William Smith 200-yard freestyle record in the prelims at the Liberty League Championships. That evening she lowered the record again to 1:54.54. A 2019-20 College All-American Strength & Conditioning Athlete of the Year, Leffler won 19 events this season.
- Dan Sliney ’22 scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in Hobart’s 4-2 win over then No. 2 Trinity. The Statesmen posted a 20-5-3 record and earned their sixth consecutive invitation to the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Championship.
- Julia Mings ‘21 scored the biggest goal of the year for the William Smith hockey team. She netted the game winner 30 seconds into overtime to beat fourth-ranked Elmira 4-3. It’s the highest ranked opponent the Herons have ever beaten.
- Alan Dubrovsky '20 opened the season winning A flight singles and doubles at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic. He went on to post an 11-3 overall record. Dubovsky finished his career with a 76-22 record in singles play, second most in program history.
- Maggie Bonomo '22 was a team best 7-4 in singles play this year. She won the A flight Consolation bracket at the Mary Hosking Invitational to open the season.
- Jason Knox ’22 broke the Hobart Division I era single game record with an incredible 10 tallies against Siena. He also held the previous mark, scoring nine goals against the Saints in 2019. The 2020 Statesmen led Division I in scoring offense, averaging 19.6 goals per game.
- Ellie Burns '21 recorded five points on four goals and an assist as William Smith defeated Oswego 18-3 in its home opener.
- Will Harrison '21 led the Statesmen golf team in scoring average, 79.8. He recorded seven of the team’s 16 rounds in 70s, tying for the team’s best round with a 75 in the first round of the Utica Invitational.
- Chloe Ethier '20 recorded her best career-scoring average this season. The Herons’ Most Valuable Golfer Award winner was the team’s second finisher in four of five invitationals this season.
