Robert F. Drinan, S.J., professor of law at Georgetown University, discussed international human rights in a talk titled "The Public Morality of the New Century."
In addition to his teaching duties at Georgetown, Father Drinan pursues careers as a priest, lawyer, politician, and activist. He serves on numerous committees devoted to the furtherance of human rights, including a current seat on the ABA House of Delegates. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International League of Human Rights, the Lawyer's Committee for International Human Rights, the Council for a Livable World Educational Fund, Americans for Democratic Action, and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He was a founding member of the Lawyers' Alliance for Nuclear Arms Control and the National Interreligious Task Force on Soviet Jewry. From 1971 until 1981, Father Drinan served in the United States Congress as a Representative from Massachusetts, where he was a member of various committees and the chair of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice of the House Judiciary Committee.
Father Drinan received the B.A. and M.A. from Boston College, the L.L.M. from Georgetown, and the Th.D. from Gregorian University in Rome, and is the recipient of 21 honorary degrees. He has served as a visiting professor at four American Universities and as the Dean of the Boston College Law School.
