Interim President and Professor Emeritus of Economics
1968-2013

A respected scholar, innovative teacher and engaged community member, McGuire taught in the Economics Department for more than 40 years. He co-founded the Colleges’ Public Policy program in Washington, D.C., which he led as faculty director 10 times. An instrumental force in the growth of the Colleges’ off-campus and global studies programming, McGuire has led several global education programs for students and alums in Ireland, England and Central Europe, in addition to co-teaching the New York City and Toronto-based “Two Cities” course for more than 20 years. McGuire was educated at St. Peter’s College before receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. from Fordham University. When McGuire retired in 2013, dozens of alums returned to campus to attend his last class and one former student, HWS Trustee Andrew G. McMaster Jr. ’74, P’09, donated the McGuire House to HWS as a residence for visiting scholars. He served as Interim President of HWS from 2018-2019.
