What were some of the opportunities you took advantage of while at HWS?
One of the most prominent reasons I cherish my time at HWS so much is the multitude of opportunities with which I was presented here. The liberal arts educational system allowed me to diversify my studies between two majors and a minor while making connections between each of the three disciplines. I also benefited from the opportunity to partake in a wide range of extracurricular activities including the One on One Friendship Club, intramural sports and French Club. However, the best opportunity I took advantage of while at HWS has to have been studying abroad. I spent the fall semester of my senior year studying French language and culture in Aix-en-Provence, France. This culturally immersive experience not only allowed me to test and improve my French language capabilities but also to become more of a globally engaged citizen.
Was there a particular professor who was essential to your path?
One of the most influential professors I was fortunate enough to work with is Professor of Religious Studies Etin Anwar. Professor Anwar leads the One on One Friendship Club that I happened to join during my sophomore year. Through this club, HWS students have the opportunity to teach English to students of all ages in Indonesia. My participation in this club allowed me to combine my interest in language learning with community service. Professor Anwar’s passion for this club’s mission inspired me to continue engaging with the global community in as many ways as possible.
How did HWS prepare you for the future?
HWS provided me with a multitude of opportunities to challenge myself both academically and personally. I am most appreciative to have had the flexibility to diversify my studies between two majors, Economics and French and Francophone Studies, and a minor, Italian, in very different academic areas. My experience with the HWS French department specifically helped me to improve upon invaluable skills such as communication, problem-solving, and analysis that I continue to use everyday. These studies, along with my semester abroad, have more than prepared me for my current job with Education First. I am very grateful for the mentorship and guidance I have received from the HWS community during my time as a student and everyday since.
