Twenty-two years since the attacks on Sept. 11, Hobart and William Smith remembered the national tragedy and joined a Geneva community event.
In remembrance of those who lost their lives during the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, including three alums, Hobart and William Smith observed the somber day.
On campus, members of the HWS community joined the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning in the Scandling Campus Center to learn more about the StoryCorps Sept. 11 Initiative. In partnership with the National September 11 Memorial and Museum project, StoryCorps has preserved one recording for each life lost that day.
At Geneva's lakefront, President Mark D. Gearan and the campus community joined Geneva residents for a service, where Gearan and several community leaders shared remarks. The annual event honors the first-responders in New York City, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, PA.
Early on Monday morning, members of Kappa Alpha Society placed 2,977 flags in the ground on the Quad; one flag to represent every life lost in the 2001 attacks.
In 2001, the HWS community lost three alumni in the attacks at the World Trade Center, all of whom worked for the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald: Andrew H. Golkin '93, who majored in economics, was a member of the football team, Kappa Sigma, Inter-fraternity Council and the International Business Club; Scott W. Rohner '01, who majored in economics and played basketball and football; and Michael J. Simon '83, P'11, P'13, who majored in economics, was a member of Theta Delta Chi and played ice hockey, lacrosse, tennis and golf. A memorial plaque dedicated to Golkin, Rohner and Simon was placed on campus at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
